I started building Norns as a way to minimize a lot of those later friction points for authors leveraging AI in a way that:

It accommodates your writing style as an author, not forces you into its mindset

It leverages AI to accomplish specialty or difficult and toil-laden tasks

The AI agent is always there for you to interact with

Critiques

Writing Help

Consistency

But the AI isn’t necessary. Norns implements a blob storage model for all of its content. That gives you versioning in platform, the ability to restore to a given version, and base formatting in the free tier when it launches. Since there’s no AI component, it’s not an expensive set of resources to offer. So you’ll be able to do best-effort EPUB / PDF generation without any cost.

Norns and Context Management

Norns

We first have to talk about Norns and what it is. It’s a SaaS I’m building to prove out a theory of mine that the workflow I used with Claude (specifically Claude Code) could be agentic in nature, and cheaper in that fashion.

My approach with writing as mentioned in my other articles is very much about velocity. Provide the foundation, have the LLM generate, ask for changes, rinse, wash and repeat. In Claude Code this works well because you have 200,000 tokens into which you can cram a lot of crap. Claude Code masks a significant amount of this by being very efficient about how interacts with things, compaction and the like. But at $100 a month for max, it’s hard to swallow as a cost for a writer who would probably be using it for input / editing.

My Approach to AI Assisted Writing

AI Assisted Writing

First off, I understand that this is going to trigger some people, but I use AI (very specifically Anthropic’s Claude Code Opus 4.5) in my writing endeavors.

Now this apparently requires some clarification as using “AI” in the same sentence as “writing” causes some people’s heads to explode because of an assumption all I’m doing is entering a prompt and getting book. This is far from the case.
